Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs - Building Homes and Strengthening Communities

Multifamily Preservation Initiatives

The preservation of existing affordable and subsidized housing stock is a critical element to achieving the Department's mission to provide safe, decent and affordable housing. Given current demographic projections for the state of Texas, stabilization of the existing stock of affordable housing is as equally important as new production in terms of meeting future demand for housing.

Funding for preservation activities is provided through many of the Department’s programs, including HOME, Housing Trust Fund and the Housing Tax Credit Program. The Department also releases special funding through the Preservation Incentives Program, when funds are available. In addition to the funding activities undertaken by each of our programs, the Department also provides links to similar property lists maintained by other federal and state agencies.

Additionally, the Department assists property owners preserve affordable housing through the Multifamily Preservation Clearinghouse. The clearinghouse helps property owners interested in selling their properties to get in touch with potential buyers interested in maintaining affordable housing.
